A lightly curated list of resources I’ve found helpful.
Scientific writing
The writing I admire most is clear, transparent, and accessible. Tips I find helpful are: 1) get on a regular writing schedule, e.g. 15 minutes or a paragraph a day, 2) read a lot and emulate good writing, and 3) get to the point quickly (see Healy's 'Fuck Nuance' paper).
Here are papers I find have vivid language, great analogies, and make clear points powerfully:
Scientific creativity
- Night Science. Itai Yanai and Martin Lercher's project on the creative, exploratory side of research. I recommend both the site and the podcast, which is great when on the go.
Some night science papers:
Data analysis & data viz
- R for Data Science (2e). Tidyverse is an absolute essential for data viz in R.
- Information is Beautiful. Good for inspiration on how to make data presentation clear and appealing.
- r/dataisbeautiful. A community sharing data vizualisations, good for browsing examples.
- Improving Your Statistical Inferences. Daniel Lakens' free online textbook on statistics for research.
- Statistical Rethinking. Richard McElreath's statistics course (youtube links).
Open science
- Institute for Replication (I4R). Joining a replication game is great for anyone who wants to have more structure and learn-by-doing, since you work in groups with others and use templated reports.
- FORRT. A community and set of resources for teaching and learning open and reproducible research. Join on Slack!
- Improving Psych. A research society & hub for efforts to improve psychological science.
Blogs
These are the blogs I read regularly.
- Experimental History. Adam Mastroianni's blog on psychology, science, and how research gets done.
Posts I recommend: - Statistical Modeling, Causal Inference, and Social Science. Andrew Gelman and colleagues on statistics, methods, and research practice.
- Global Mental Health Unboxed. Technically a newsletter but can't recommend it enough! Gergana Manolova's monthly list of current opportunities, papers, resources in GMH.
These are blogs I check more sporadically but also find valuable.
- Bishop Blog. Posts on science, reproducibility, publishing.
- Bayesian Spectacles. Posts on Bayesian statistics and its use in research.
- Data Colada. Posts on research methods, replicability, and scrutinizing published findings.
- The 100% CI. Posts on research methods and meta-science.
